Description
These artifacts are cufflinks found on the Isles of Scilly from the HMS Association shipwreck. They are made of silver and have tudor rose engraved on the face of them. One cufflink is missing the hold which goes inside the jacket cuff. The most likely individual for this type of accessory to belong to was someone of wealth or influence on the ship. These cufflinks are believed to have belonged to Sir Clowdisley Shovell who is the Lord High Admiral of England in 1707.
The HMS Association was the 90 gun flagship of Admiral Sir Clowdisley Shovell carrying over 800 people. They set out with three other ships, HMS Eagle, HMS Romney, and HMS Firebrand from Gibraltar on September 29, 1707. Upon entering the treacherous English waters in a howling gale on October 22, 1707 the ships hit the rocks off the Isles of Scilly. All ships sank with over 1800 men.
