Description

This artifact is a One Quarter Anna from British India.  The British East India Company (EIC) minted these coins for use as currency and to help promote trade in the region.  They began minted and introducing these coins into the region in 1835 and minted this style was continued until 1849.  The Anna was used as currency in India until 1957 and in Pakistan until 1961 when they were replaced with the Paise.

This coin is in great condition and all detail/lettering can be seen on both sides.  These coins were minted from copper and some discoloration can be seen.  This style of the One Quarter Anna has the shield and two tigers symbol for the British East India Company (EIC) and the date 1835 on one side and the other side the lettering “EAST INDIA COMPANY ONE QUARTER ANNA” on the other.
