Descripción

This artifact is a British East India Company (EIC) coin that sank aboard the Admiral Gardner in 1809.  The Admiral Garnder was a British trade vessel named after Admiral Alan Gardner and was commissioned in 1797.

She was carrying a load of coins/tokens to be used at EIC trading posts throughout India and nearby regions for means of trade.  These coins were among the first in the world to be produced by steam power.  They were packed in wax within wooden barrels and set aboard the Admiral Gardner.  They didn’t make the voyage long until January 1809 when she sank.  She didn’t even make it out of the English Channel and ran aground on the Goodwin Sands.

This coin is a copper EIC coin in great professionally restored condition.  The denomination is X Cash which was the more common value coin aboard the vessel.  There was also the very rare XX Cash coin that had a small presence onboard.

This artifact comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from Global Xploration.
